Galaxy offensive in opening victory
by Kevin Pearson (Result | Press Enterprise - )
The restructured LA Galaxy offense had the debut it hoped for. It's defense couldn't say the same. After struggling to score last season but allowing the fewest goals in the league, the Galaxy's new attacking style of offense was able to overcome a pair of defensive lapses to earn a season-opening 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution in front of a crowd of 25,152 at The Home Depot Center. more details | go to article

There's No Stopping Ruiz
by Luis Bueno (Result | Press Enterprise - )
Despite his best efforts, Chad Marshall couldn't keep Carlos Ruiz off the scoreboard. Marshall, a Rubidoux High grad, played a stellar match against the high-flying Galaxy but Ruiz eventually figured out Columbus' defense, if not Marshall. When not marked by Marshall, Ruiz bagged his fourth and fifth goals as the Galaxy beat Columbus, 2-0, at The Home Depot Center on Saturday. more details | go to article

Arena-Led U.S. Owns Mexico
by Luis Bueno (Analysis | Press Enterprise - )
It wasn't Olympic qualifying, it wasn't the Gold Cup and it certainly wasn't the World Cup. It was just a friendly - a rather unfriendly one at that - between two bitter rivals. But in the end, it played out like a rivalry match should. more details | go to article

They Come For Soccer, Family Time And A Break From Work
by Cecilia M. Gomez-Gonzalez (Article | Press Enterprise - )
At 6:50 a.m. on a Sunday morning in Coachella, a field of grass lies nearly empty, quiet and clean. . Laughter is heard from children waiting for breakfast in their homes at a nearby housing complex. Arturo Torres said this week will rank among the most memorable of his life. A pretty strong statement, since Torres will not have a soccer ball at his feet for much of it. C., to take part in Wednesday's Cinco de Mayo celebration at the White House with President Bush. more details | go to article

FIFA's Decision Is A Real Crime
by Luis Bueno (Commentary | Press Enterprise - )
What did soccer fans across the globe do wrong? Why must our beloved World Cup suffer such a miserable fate? Today FIFA will announce the recipient of the 2010 World Cup, and if all goes as expected, favorite South Africa will be awarded the world's greatest sporting spectacle. Egypt, Morocco and Libya are also in the running. Tunisia and Nigeria withdrew earlier bids. But instead of a celebration, the announcement seems like a prison sentence that will haunt soccer fans for years to come. more details | go to article

Whose Town Is It Anyway?
by Jim Alexander (Commentary | Press Enterprise - )
All this time, when we've been debating whether it's Shaq's town or Kobe's town, I have a suspicion we haven't thought about it nearly enough. Who's to say it's not Eric's town? Or Adrian's? Or Vladimir's? And you have to allow for the probability that Carlos has his own neighborhood, or Tony, or Chris. Or Lisa. more details | go to article
